2024-Oct-11 Twitter temporarily locked my account

On October 11, 2024, Twitter notified me that my account is locked for 12 hours.  To use any functions on Twitter, I first had to delete a posting that was determined to be "abusive harassment," but I couldn't see what that post was prior to clicking on the only option available, which was to "delete" it (and after this I also couldn't figure out which posting got deleted).

I suspect that some angry anti-abortion/forced-birther people I was conversing with made complaints about me, and that the automated systems counted multiple complaints as legitimate, but I really don't know for sure because the reason for the blocking was not made clear and I've never harassed anyone.

While I like Twitter's recent emphasis on freedom of expression (which they refer to, simply, as "freedom of speech"), I'm rapidly losing confidence in this important promise due, primarily, to various problems others I know have been experiencing.  In one particular example, I recently discovered that Rosie O'Donnell's account disappeared, with no explanation on Twitter or in Google News searches -- she was one of my followers, and I also followed her because I appreciate that she so strongly calls out and denounces corruption and abuses of power, and because she promotes equality, freedom, and human rights, all of which I believe makes her well-suited to be on this platform that specifically promises to protect some of these values.

In summary, to me it appears that Twitter is failing badly, partly from a technical aspect where reliability has been suffering ever since Elon Musk recklessly cut server internet cables; and partly from a philosophical aspect because censorship does seem to be occurring in various ways, including what seems to be "algorithmic favouritism" that subtly presents more right-wing political viewpoints into my usage experience.  So, I think it's time for me to finally move my main efforts over to Bluesky (search for randolf.ca to find me there), which doesn't suffer from staff recklessly cutting internet cables in data centres and seems to treat all users equally in its algorithms.

Hopefully my Twitter account will remain in tact because many people are subscribed to my Twitter Lists, and occasionally also reach out to me there for various reasons including coordinating informal video meetings.  Although I will be severely limiting my effort to participate in Twitter in the future, I will be focusing my social media time instead on other social networks where I don't have to worry about my contributions being censored or otherwise limited without reasonable explanations and options for redress.
